My grandma used to sing a regional version of this to my brother and I as kids (it was our favorite lullaby, so much so, that we asked her to sing it into our mid-teens). My Mom recently divulged that it was actually our late Grandpa (a Mainer, who died when she was little) who taught them the song. When I found this little picture book, I immediately ordered a few copies (and as my brother is engaged, and a few friends are dating, I’ll probably be ordering more eventually. ;) ).My older relatives used this story (and others of a kind) to gently explain sensitive topics to us kids. We got to learn, grow, and face hard truths about the world in a safe and protected environment where we could ask questions to understand. I highly recommend using books like this for that!Things to note:Story summary is that a fox goes out, kills a goose and duck, farmer chases it, fox provides for his family.This story isn’t modern day PC, so some parents/guardians will probably have issues because of it mentioning death/the foxes killing & eating the pilfered poultry. And that is okay. Sheltering their children in such a manner should be respected, as it is a decision made in love.
I like foxes, but this story was too "real" for my kids. I understand that it's a traditional folk tale, but the killing of the goose was just too harsh for my family.
Exact copy of the book that we had in the house as a kid. The words are a little different than my dad used to sing them, but it's exactly what I was looking for.
Wonderful song/story for kids. They love it. Verses repeat from one page to another. One repeat page is missing near the end of the book. Seems to a problem with this edition not just with this book. Still definitely worth having in your collection. The repeat is easy to fake. Everyone loves this old favorite including my husband who never knew it as a child!
Anna Trodglen's art shows sophistication and charm. The vibrant red brings her fox drawings to life against the cold of a black and white town. Interspersed between the images are the lyrics to a Middle English folk tale about a fox feeding his cubs. A lovely gift for any child or art-lover, and a wonderful way to support a small, independent artist.
My daughter LOVES Nickel Creek's version of "The Fox Went Out.." and expressed a desire to learn it. She is pre-reading, and so the pictures in this book have proved to be a valuable tool for jogging her memory for the lyrics. Though the subject matter can seem a bit "gory" to modern parents ("Cut up the goose with a fork and a knife"), the illustrations (while suggestive) are not by any means inappropriate for even the youngest of children. Recommended for children (and adults!) who are familiar with the folk tune and would like a nice book to add to their collection.
My son loves this book and the tune that goes along with it! The story is a bit "old-school" but the pictures are beautiful and it is easy for the kids to read. It is really memorable to have a book that has a song that goes along with it. I highly recommend for beginner readers!!
