While you take notes, you listen carefully to the lecturer, you process the new material, you organize it in your working memory, and you finally write down what you think is most important. All this happens while someone is talking at an average speed of three words per second and someone is writing down at an average speed of one-third of a word per second. It doesn’t sound easy now, does it?

Notes are an important tool for learning. We don’t take notes just to record a few facts so we can review them later. Learning happens as we take notes. Taking notes the right way leads to good study practices, better performance on exams, and long-term retention of information.

“It comes naturally.” FALSE. Note taking is not obvious or intuitive. Research has shown that students fail to capture 40% of the main points in a typical lecture. First-year students capture only 11%. In some studies, even the best note takers seem to record less than 75% of the important information. We often reproduce the lecturer’s phrases verbatim. We don’t save time by systematic use of abbreviations. We fail to become a “good psychologist” of our lecturer. We fail to pick up his enthusiasm. We fail to interpret the tone of his voice. We fail to read his body language. And the result is that we fail to take good notes.

“Anyway, no one taught me how to take notes in school or in college.” TRUE. Educators believe that students are able to assess the quality of their notes and follow good practices. However, studies have shown the exact opposite. The fact that there isn’t a course in college dedicated to the art of taking notes (or learning in general) makes students believe that this is a natural skill that they can perfect with practice over the course of their studies.

“At the end of the day, everyone has their own way to take notes.” TRUE. In this book, you may be surprised to learn that I don’t make any references to different types of note-taking systems like those that other books do. The reason is that it’s the practices behind the note taking that matter most. For example, you should not copy the lecturer’s phrases word for word, but generate the main points in your own words. And you should leave space on your notes for adding comments and testing yourself later. I encourage students to use the Cornell note-taking system because it utilizes most of the principles of effective note taking. No matter which note-taking system you decide to follow, the cognitive effort you will have to expend is equally high.

Note taking may not be rocket science, but it’s definitely science—cognitive science. And cognitive science has produced a lot of useful insights that we can use now to take better notes. Again I bought this for my eight year old son, who always...and I mean ALWAYS asks questions that I have no idea (nor do I really care) about the answers. This is a good book, that shows a picture of the part and a description of how it works and what it does. Examples might be a radiator, or spark plug...etc. He loves it. As long as it keeps him reading and learning!!

I'm a recent mechanical engineering graduate and I (embarrassingly) was never that familiar with car engines. I perform all basic maintenance myself, but have never really done any in-depth repairs out of a combination of laziness and unfamiliarity with engines. Learning the basic 4-stroke engine cycle is one thing, but knowing how an engine and entire automobile is put together is a whole 'nother story.If you are totally unfamiliar with vehicle engines, or have some knowledge but are no expert mechanic by any means, I HIGHLY suggest purchasing this book. It follows a "one page per component" format, meaning every single page in the book is dedicated to a different component. I feel it's the perfect combination of being brief enough to make it easy to read and follow along, but detailed enough so that you really understand HOW components function, just just simply "what they do".The book covers all aspects of how cars work, not just engines. It goes into the steering system, powertrain, cooling system, brakes and parking brakes, electrical system, you name it! Obviously, with only one page dedicated to every component, you aren't going to get into the math/physics behind everything. Each page consists of, generally, statements about the component, its function, and how it interacts with other components to perform its intended function.I'm extremely glad that I purchased this book. If you want to have any idea (or a better idea) of what a mechanic or anyone else is talking about next time you hear the words "differential", "U-Joints", "cylinder head", etc., then buy this book!

This book was refreshingly simple. Each page has one subject, and after each chapter, there is a short test. The author teaches automobile jargon in a way that is easy to understand. I am onto the second chapter, and I’ve already learned so much more than I expected. I’m even retaining the information more than I typically would because of the combination of easy to read text and illustrations. I am pleased that this book is also a short read compared to many other introductory books. This is perfect for an absolute novice!

This book is amazing. I have always been fascinated by cars but I knew nothing about them. I wanted to know more and decided to buy this book, and it was one of the best decisions I could have made. It describes every part of a car, and easily enough so people without much background knowledge can understand, but thoroughly enough so that you learn it well. It even has many pictures so that you can not only get a good description, but you can learn what it looks like and where it is in a car. This book may not be good for mechanics, but if you are just starting to learn about cars or only know the basics this book will be great for you!

My husband is an Auto Technician. Unfortunately, I never had the time and interest in learning about cars. As I started building his clientele, I realized that I had zero knowledge about cars...I didn’t even know how a car works!Once I decided I wanted to educate myself about cars..I started my search for books and believe it or not..there is not much out there for beginners like THIS BOOK. With that being said, it is worth the price!Take my word...from a woman with zero knowledge about cars...THIS BOOK is the best book to start learning about the FUNDAMENTALS. Just perfect thank you. I will be searching more of Tom Newton’s books.

The content is relevant and as up to date as is realistic, given the fast-changing nature of this field. I am using it as a study guide for the MB(ASCP) exam and hope it will prove useful. My concern is the gross number of typos and errors. I have written down the ones I was able to find at the 3/4 finished mark and I have over 2 pages. What about the information that I am unaware of? I expect proofreading in a textbook and this one falls far short of the mark, hence why I gave it only 3 stars.

Personally, I found this book hard to understand. To me it was not a good read and I found a few typos that made me wonder if it was even edited. It's more for a person who is at a more intermediate level rather than introductory. You can tell that the person who wrote the book clearly understands the material, but their ability to explain said material at an introductory level is elementary at best. I feel like a lot of this information got lost in translation.

This book is an author's best effort to collect disparate topics under one cover. Molecular diagnostics is a new field and there are really only two other books covering the area by co-authors Coleman and Tsongalis. Buckingham's is slightly better, as it appears to be written by one author, who co-ordinates all the content and the index. Coleman and Tsongalis serve only as editors to their books and the chapters, written by various authors, happen to represent the authors' specialties rather than contributing to a unified text. The indexes in the latter two books are sparse and do not coordinate with the content of the chapters. Nor do the figures, critical to the understanding of complicated techniques and assays, coordinate with the text of the chapters. Buckingham, however, does have a better index (not great) and her figures are text driven, rather than copied and pasted as available. A major drawback of Buckingham is the lack of proof reading, as it is full of errors and typos. Another issue is that the study questions might have written by somebody else, since some of the answers contradict or are not consistent with the material presented in the chapters. My worry as I study for the ASCP molecular biology exam is the errors which I am not aware of.

I used this book to study for my MB(ASCP) certification. It was excellent for that purpose. It covers a really wide variety of topics, has great figures and is easy to understand. It doesn't have a huge amount of depth on most topics, but it's perfect for an overview.

I got this book for school. I have background in science but very little in molecular. I found this book very tedious to read and difficult to understand. It would be good for someone in the field, but for an introductory molecular class it is too confusing. The advanced concepts boxes I skipped because I had a hard enough time getting through the chapters. Hated it. Makes the field seem more tedious than interesting.

Saved my life in my molecular pathology masters (and MB certification). All the diagrams are great, even if they’re oddly all purple and grey.

As a molecular technologist studying for the ASCP BOC exam for molecular technologist certification, this book serves as an excellent revision tool. Not only does it cover the basic concepts of molecular biology and techniques used in the lab, but also includes nice diagramatic representations, troubleshooting, advanced concepts, case studies and study questions for each section. I would highly recommend this book to anyone looking to take the ASCP certification exam or brush up on their knowledge of molecular biology in the clinical lab.

This is a must read for those laboratory professionals trying to advance their knowledge in molecular diagnostics especially for those people taking the MB(ASCP) exam. Sure it helped me pass the exam.There are just few editorial typos in this book but negligible.
