This book is FASCINATING. It's very detailed but not only gives the details of clothing and fabrics, but also gives some historical and sociological background to each piece of undergarments over the centuries. It's a bit voyeuristic without being erotic if that makes sense! I couldn't put it down and when I shared it with some friends, they were FULL of questions and interest in the subject matter! Don't assume this is a light treatment of undergarments or fashion history - this book is not only full of very pertinent and interesting details (along with excerpts from letters, household accounts, speeches, etc.), but it's also well written.
Had bought a paperback addition and was very disappointed: all the photographs and pictures are only black and withe. Some photographs are so dark that one can barely see what is on the picture. The text was disappointing as well, not much of explanation about any of the garments featured. I had returned the book.
This is an excellent sourcebook for research. What did they wear under their clothes throughout history? Note: 'Underclothes' in this book means the garments that lay beneath, say, a doublet or a coat (we call them 'jackets' now). Photos of the actual items, or contemporary depictions are in the text. My only criticism, and it is not enough to make me remove a star, is that this is a facsimile reissue of an older book, and the text and some of the photos are dark or difficult to read/see. I would recommend this for anyone researching historical costumes.
Very informative book of underclothes throughout history. I'm using a reference guide as I write a novel set in the medieval times. The Cunnington's did an excellent job in presenting this history. If you're a writer and you want to undress your characters, this is the book to have.
This is a charmingly written and informative history of underwear, and it proves its point: that underclothes are an important part of the history of fashion. I did occasionally find myself getting lost in the details and would have appreciated more schematic illustrations. But in the whole, I highly recommend it to anyone interested in fashion history.
I haven't finished this book yet but it is very well done and I've greatly enjoyed it.
This is a good book but not quite what I expected. There was a lot of history on the undergarments and less on how to design the pieces. Given what is available in this department it's a well constructed book demonstrating the history of vintage undergarments.
The detail in this book is remarkable and includes both men's and women's underwear from medieval through the early 20th century. The illustrations are marvelous and plenty, giving the reader excellent visuals. I loved the Elizabethan picture of bum rolls which were used to round out the skirts of sixteenth century gowns like a bustle (pg 51). A definite must for history buffs!
